He worked as a male prostitute during his years as a struggling actor.
He was never a big star, not gaining much recognition until after his death.
He married three times and divorced twice.
Co-star Jane Fonda criticized his performance in 'Walk on the Wild Side (1962).'

His attempts at directing were never very successful.
