    Translated: 'Honore de Balzac,' 'Bastien Lepage' and 'Messonier'
    Editor: The New York Commercial Advertiser, The Forum, and The New York Globe
    He was a lawyer.
    After quitting the law, he went from Latin and Sanskrit professor at NYU to newspaper editor, to critic and author.
    He used three names.
    He was blunt in his criticisms and could be perceived as quite arrogant.
    He quit as a lawyer after only three years.
    He was obviously very smart and had an incredible education.
    He made some outstanding contributions to literary theory and criticism, especially with his book, 'The Craftsmanship of Writing.'
    He was able to work full-time as a writer for most of his last twenty years.
