    He is divorced.
    He was only married to his ex-wife, Martha Stewart, for two years (1946-48).
    He was an alcoholic who wound up dying because of his vices.
    He turned down an offer to exclusively perform at the Al Capone-owned Green Mill Cocktail Lounge because he had agreed to perform at a rival gangs club, The Rendezvous, for more money. Al had Jack 'The Machine Gun' McGurn order a mob hit on him.
    He once said: 'You're not drunk enough if you can still lie on the floor without hanging on.'
    Jack McGurn met him in a hotel room, beat him severely, slashed his throat and left him for dead.
    He survived the mob hit issued by Al Capone (1927).
    It would take him several years to learn how to speak properly again.
    He allowed himself to be roasted at the Friars Club.
