    (October 12, 1921-January 8, 2010)
    Born in Detroit, Michigan
    Birth name was Arthur Farrington
    Pioneer in stop-motion clay animation
Created the characters Gumby and Davey & Goliath
He enrolled in a seminary to become an Episcopal priest, but dropped out after 'I realized that I didn't want to be at anyone's beck and call all day.'
He said he started working in claymation because 'It was cheaper than getting actors.'
He said he underwent a 'life-changing experience' while on LSD.
He credited the 80s revival of Gumby's popularity to Indian guru Satya Sai Baba blessing a Gumby figurine.
When he was nine, his father died in a car crash; when his mother remarried, he was placed in an orphanage because his stepfather did not want him around.
He conducted photo reconnaissance missions over North Africa and France during World War II.
He enjoyed Eddie Murphy's parody, saying 'Gumby can laugh at himself.'
He said, 'I wasn't trying to exploit children or do formula television. Gumby was an honest attempt to entertain and give kids a little joy.'
