    Born in Munich, Germany
Keyboardist/vocalist with Silver (1976-78) and the Grateful Dead (1979-90)
When Bob Weir asked him to join the Dead, he was unaware that the band was still together.
Jerry Garcia said, 'Brent had a deeply self-destructive streak.'
His disintegrating marriage led to an onstage breakdown (April 21, 1986).
At the time of his death, he was facing potential jail time for a DUI conviction.
He died from a cocaine and heroin speedball.
Jerry Garcia said he was the best singer in the Dead.
On the 'Built to Last' album, he contributed more songs than the Jerry Garcia-Robert Hunter team.
His ecological song 'We Can Run' was adopted as a theme by the Audubon Society.
Garcia said, 'Brent had this thing he was never able to shake, which was that thing of being the new guy. And he wasn't the new guy; I mean, he was with us for ten years! That's longer than most bands last.'
