U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (September 17, 1955- )
    Born in Wheatland, Missouri
Represented the 133rd District in the Missouri House of Representatives (2005-11)
Represented the 28th District in the Missouri Senate (2011-17)
    Lieutenant Governor (2017-18)
Governor of Missouri (assumed office June 1, 2018)
    Republican

Why he might be annoying:

He was reported to be the only statewide official accepting gifts from lobbyists (2017).
He advocated repealing a voter-approved constitutional amendment to establish nonpartisan redistricting of the state’s House and Senate districts, which (purely coincidentally, no doubt) was expected to reduce the number of seats held by Republicans (December, 2018).
He also expressed support for making it harder to put issues up for ballot referendum.
He signed a bill to criminalize abortions after the eighth week of pregnancy with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest (May 24, 2019).
Early in the epidemic, he boasted that the state had tested ‘nearly 17 people’ for COVID-19 (March 5, 2020).
He recommended that schools reopen in fall of 2020 even if the coronavirus epidemic was ongoing, saying ‘If they do get COVID-19, which they will — and they will when they go to school — they’re not going to the hospitals…. They’re going to go home and they’re going to get over it,’ ignoring that while ‘getting over it,’ the kids can be vectors for spreading the disease to more vulnerable populations.
Also being ignored: some children infected with COVID-19 have, after ‘getting over’ their initial infection, developed long-term complications, including MIS-C, a potentially fatal inflammatory blood disease.
He opposed expanding voting by mail during the COVID-19 epidemic, saying that people worried about their health should stay home and not vote (May.28, 2020).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served two terms in the Military Police (1975-81).
He was sheriff of Polk County (1992-2004).
He eventually signed a bill allowing voters to obtain absentee ballots for elections in 2020 without requiring a reason, as long as the mail-in ballots are notarized (June 5, 2020).
