TV Series
    (September 29, 1969-January 11, 1974)
    ABC
    Ensemble cast
Theme by Charles Fox and Arnold Margolin
Every episode title began with ‘Love and…’
According to Garry Marshall, unsold or failed pilots would be featured as bits on the show.
Many episodes featured the same ornate brass bed.
Perhaps not coincidentally, the theme song featured references to ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’
One episode featured two reserved ventriloquists who relied on their puppets to communicate.
The 1985 remake (‘New Love American Style’) aired directly opposite The Price Is Right — ratings suicide.
It never ranked higher than 25th in the Nielsens.
It was the anchor for Happy Days — and the escapist fantasy era on ABC.
To this end, it went on to inspire a wave of 1950s nostalgia.
Producers – even Marshall himself – were often able to convince Aaron Spelling to air their unused pilots.
Because all episodes were self-contained with different characters and settings, continuity was never a problem.
Though provocative and sometimes downright racy for its time, it is extremely subdued by 2000s standards.
