The Resume

    (November 23, 1921-January 6, 2003)
    Grew up in Chicago, Illinois
Birth name was Mamie Elizabeth Carthan
14-year-old son Emmett Till was murdered in Mississippi by racists for whistling at a white woman (August 28, 1955)

Why she might be annoying:

Although her son's body was mutilated and disfigured, she insisted on an open casket funeral.
She allowed photographs of the body to be published in magazines, adding fuel to an already volatile situation.
She refused to allow his body to be exhumed for positive ID.
Just months before her death she told a friend, 'I guess we all think realistically about that day when we will be victimized by what is life's final common denominator ... that something we call death.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She grew up believing skin color doesn't make a difference in a person's worth.
Both white men charged with the murder were acquitted by an all white jury.
There may have been up to 10 people involved, yet his murder officially remains unsolved.
She was a cum laude graduate of Chicago Teachers College (1956).
She founded the Emmett Till Players, a civil-rights-related youth theater group (1973).
She received a master's degree in administration/supervision from Loyola University in Chicago (1975).
She outlived both alleged murderers. One had the gall to state a year before he died, 'A lot of people made a bunch of money off of this. I ain't never made a damn nickel!'
When ask why she didn't go the back of the bus, Rosa Parks said, 'I thought about Emmitt Till and I just couldn't go back.'
She was an activist in Illinois against capital punishment.
She died just 2 weeks before the premier of the PBS program 'The Murder of Emmett Till.'
Jesse Jackson recalled, 'She was a very articulate teacher who saw the pain of her son and did a profound, strategic thing.'
She is buried next to her son.
