Why he might be annoying:

He was reprimanded for being too harsh in dealing with Quakers and Baptists settling in Cape Cod.
Despite his various accomplishments, he is best known for a fictional love triangle with Priscilla Mullens and Miles Standish described in a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served on the jury in a witch trial where the jury let the defendant go free and found the accuser guilty of libel.
His descendants include John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Longfellow, Orson Welles and Marilyn Monroe.
