Why he might be annoying:

Before his testimony before the Iran-Contra committee, Senator Daniel Inouye mentioned that he did not like the idea of a man in uniform lying to the committee. Poindexter's response was that he would wear a business suit instead of his uniform while testifying.
He told the committee he approved using money from arms sales to Iran to fund the Contras without telling Ronald Reagan to maintain 'future deniability' for the President.
He was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, perjury, defrauding the government and destroying evidence (April 7, 1990).
The convictions were overturned on a technicality (1991).
The Information Awareness Office (IAO) was accused of being a potential 'Big Brother' domestic surveillance organization.
Congressional funding for the IAO was cut off after an audit revealed a fundamental lack of privacy protections for US citizens.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated first in his class from the Naval Academy.
He earned two Legions of Merit in the Navy.
He reviewed White House security following the assassination attempt against Reagan.
He was reportedly the inspiration for Tom Clancy's hero Jack Ryan.
His son Alan is a NASA astronaut and Space Shuttle pilot.
