The Resume

    (January 4, 1972- )
    WBA World Heavyweight Champion (2001-April 30, 2005)
First Heavyweight Champ of Latino heritage
    NABF Heavyweight Boxing Champ (1997)
    Nicknamed 'The Quietman'
    Record 41-6-1 (April 30, 2005)
    Retired (April 30, 2005)

Why he might be annoying:

He is considered a 'paper champion,' as he never beat Lennox Lewis for the WBA Championship.
He was knocked out in nineteen seconds of the first round by David Tua, and has provided a longstanding black mark on his reputation.
His fighting style (almost purely clinching) makes for extremely boring fights.
Many believe that he was lucky to successfully defend his title against Evander Holyfield in their third fight, as the result was a draw, when many believe Holyfield indeed beat him on points.
He mocked opponent Kirk Johnson's Canadian heritage, buying him a bus ticket back to Halifax, and saying the fight between the two would not be a war as Canada had never been in a war (although Canada has fought in both World Wars).
He received his 'The Quietman' nickname when his management was trying to locate him, asking around, and getting familiar answers such as, 'Who? That quiet guy?'
After his win over Kirk Johnson, commentator Larry Merchant asked Lennox Lewis' trainer, Emmanuel Steward, if Lewis would refuse to fight him saying he (Ruiz) was not worthy enough, and Steward responded, 'Well if Lennox don't, I will, this man has never produced an exciting fight and never will, it would be a waste of our time for Lennox to train for him, he did not win this fight, he forced Johnson to DQ, he doesn't beat his opponents, he just wins his fights.'
Since becoming the WBA Champion, the belt has been considered highly devalued (because of the manner in which he won it).
He is promoted by Don King.
He has been critcized for being too boring and sloppy in the ring.
He was knocked out in ninteen seconds by David Tua (March 15, 1996).
While announcing his retirement, he complained: 'I treated everybody with respect, but they didn't treat me the same way' (April 30, 2005).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business Magazine (2001).
He went 36 rounds with Evander Holyfield.
He does not fight strictly for money, instead he fights for the respect he feels he deserves and to support his family.
His fighting style, although boring, makes him somewhat of a tough opponent (Kirk Johnson could not stop hitting low blows; Evander Holyfield looked way past his best against him; etc.).
When Don King encouraged him to go for a knockout against Johnson, Ruiz responded by saying you cannot fight like that, commenting that boxing was a skill, not one punch.
Despite his limited talent, he has 'a lot of heart.'
He donates a portion of the earnings that he makes in the ring to several charities.
