    De-industrialization and restructuring of the city's infrastructure after World War II caused the city to fall into deep decline.
    The city was plagued by government corruption.
    In 1978, teachers in the town went on a 19-day strike that eventually resulted in 274 people jailed.
    Hotel and casino mogul Steve Wynn was hired to build a casino in the city, but the planned failed to materialize.
    The city filed for bankruptcy protection in 1991.
    It was home to the first Subway Sandwiches restaurant in 1965.
    The toy frisbee was invented here, and the city became home to the Frisbee Pie Company.
    It houses the popular 'Gathering of the Vibes' music festival.
    Circus owner P.T. Barnum served as one of the city's mayors.
