    (March 29, 1952-June 11, 2012)
    Born in Camaguey, Cuba
    Amateur Cuban boxer
Winner of the Olympic Gold Medal in 1972, 1976, and 1980
Retired with a record of 302 wins and 22 losses
He refused to turn professional, claiming the love of the Cuban people was more important than money, but he was incredibly well rewarded by the Cuban government.
He never criticized the communist government his countrymen died trying to escape from.
Although the boxing public wanted him to turn pro in the 1970's, most experts didn't really consider him a real threat to the heavyweight title.
He was a propaganda tool of Cuban communist dictator Fidel Castro.
At six foot five and around 220 pounds, he was far larger than most heavyweights of his time.
He was a very accurate puncher with tremendous power in each hand.
He once went undefeated for eleven years, 1972-1983, possibly an amateur record.
Married with children for many years, he never had a hint of scandal in his personal life.
He is a genuine hero to the Cuban people and not one forced on them by their government.
He later helped young fighters in Cuba.
