The father of American 20th Century architecture
Architect of the Unity Temple in Oak Park (1906); Midway Gardens in Chicago (1914); the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo (1915-22); Fallingwater near Pittsburgh (1936); and the Guggenheim Museum (1956-9)
Wrote 'An Organic Architecture (1939) and 'An American Architecture (1955)

Why he might be annoying:

Less than half of the buildings he designed were actually built.
He refused architect Daniel Burnham's offer of a free study trip to Europe.
He left his wife and children for Mamah Cheney, the wife of one of his clients (1909).
When Cheney and her children were murdered, he took up with Miriam Noel, a sculptress.
Simon & Garfunkel wrote a song about him.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was mostly self taught.
He advocated convenience, comfort and spaciousness with economy in architecture.
He had to rebuild his own home twice after it was destroyed by fire (1914, 1925).
He donated his country retreat, Fallingwater, to the nation.
