Stars Shepherd and Willis feuded off-set.
The show was plagued by production delays, with Shepherd noting, 'Almost from the moment the cameras stated rolling, we were behind schedule.'
Ratings dropped sharply after Dave and Maddie consummated their relationship, ending the show's sexual tension.
During Season 4, Shepherd and Willis had few scenes together (she was pregnant, he was filming 'Die Hard'), which was disastrous for a show dependent on its stars' chemistry.
In an episode in which Maddie suffers a miscarriage, Willis portrayed her unborn baby, doing a song and dance number in the womb.
It was simultaneously nominated for a Best Drama Emmy and a Best Comedy Golden Globe.
It was known for 'breaking the fourth wall,' such as having the characters address the audience or a chase scene that left the set and continued through the studio lot.
When the network objected to the inclusion of black and white scenes in the film noir homage 'The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice,' the producers hired Orson Welles to record a 'warning' for viewers.
The script for the 'Atomic Shakespeare' episode was written entirely in iambic pentameter.
