Why he might be annoying
He was rejected after auditioning for Sun Records (1957).
'Mary Lou' was the only one of his singles to make the Billboard Top 40.
He is remembered more as a footnote in the career of The Band than for his own music.
In the Bob Dylan-directed film 'Renaldo and Clara,' he portrays Bob Dylan while Bob Dylan plays Renaldo. (It doesn't make any more sense on screen.)
He got stoned with Pierre Trudeau: 'The prime minister had his own stuff... And it was almost as good as John [Lennon]'s.'
Why he might not be annoying
He began touring Canada on the advice of Conway Twitty and settled there after realizing that in the southern US he was just one of several rockabilly singers but in the Great White North he was unique.
His backing band, The Hawks, became The Band.
He was nicknamed 'Mr. Dynamo' for his high-energy live shows.
Bob Dylan called him 'the guru of rock and roll.'
John Lennon and Yoko Ono crashed at his house while playing the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival Festival (1969), and caused a ceiling collapse when they left the water running in an upstairs bathtub.
