Why he might be annoying:

He practiced and preached vegetarianism.
He made unfounded claims of healing properties by eating a regiment of foods.
He claimed eating meat is a sin.
He claimed hot breakfasts lead to excessive masturbation.
He created the cold breakfast Sanitas Corn Flakes to prevent masturbation.
He espoused chastity.
Many participants in the spa would sneak off to 'The Red Onion' to eat meat.
Much of his medical knowledge is questionable at best.

Why he might not be annoying:

He turned a faltering hydrotherapy institution run by the Seventh-Day Adventists, into a successful enterprise.
He made Battlecreek Michigan a household name.
He created a nut-based meat substitutes such as Protose and Nuttose. Protose tasted like prime steak and Nuttose tastes like veal.
He was one of the first medical people to link lung cancer with smoking.
Dr. Mayo did credit him with being a skillful surgeon.
