Received a doctorate in theology while studying in Rome

Why he might be annoying:

Before becoming an auxiliary bishop, he spent most of his career safely ministering to the wealthy and as an academic and administrator.
His doctorate was in ascetical theology, whatever that is.
His full name was Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez.

Why he might not be annoying:

After his friend, Father Rutilio Grande, was murdered for speaking against the oppressive government of El Salvador, Romero became a convert to his cause.
He became the leader in the pro-democracy movement in El Salvador and throughout Central America.
250,000 people attended his funeral, where they were fired upon after a bomb exploded.
He died for a noble cause.
Although some leftists and supporters of liberation theology have tried to co-opt him to their cause before and after his death, he explicitly rejected communism and remained faithful to the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church has declared him a martyr and is moving towards his canonization.
