    Birth name was Gabriel-Maximilien Leuvielle
    Made some 200 shorts including 'The Skater's Debut' (1907), 'Max and His Mother-in-Law' (1910), 'Max and His Dog' (1912), 'Max's Hat' (1913), 'Max and the Jealous Husband' (1914), 'Max in America' (1917) and 'Seven Years Bad Luck' (1921)
    Also directed and wrote his films

Why he might be annoying:

    His two attempts at breaking into American films were failures.
    He suffered bouts of depression.
    When he was 40, he married an 18-year-old.
    He and his wife overdosed in a double suicide.
    He and his wife left conflicting wills, triggering a court battle between their families over custody of the couple's daughter.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Prior to World War I, he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world.
    Although he was declared physically unfit for combat during WWI, he served as a dispatch driver until he was seriously wounded.
    After his death, Charlie Chaplin dedicated a film 'For the unique Max, the great master -- from his student, Charles Chaplin.'
