Socialite
    (November 28, 1901-February 21, 1960)
Born in Romsey, England, United Kingdom
Birth name was Edwina Cynthia Annette Ashley
    Married Lord Louis Mountbatten (1922)
A biographer described her as embarking on 'two decades of frivolity' after marrying Mountbatten.
She successfully sued the newspaper 'The People' for suggesting that she was having an affair with singer Paul Robeson.
At the time, she was actually having an affair with jazz musician Leslie Hutchinson, for whom she allegedly commissioned Cartier to design a diamond-studded penis sheath.
While her husband was serving as last Viceroy of India, she allegedly slept with future prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Romance novelist Barbara Cartland called her 'a complex personality... a man's brain in a very beautiful woman's body.'
With the start of World War II, she found a new sense of purpose, joining the St. John's Ambulance Brigade and organizing 60,000 social workers during the London Blitz.
She was considered a heroine in India and Pakistan for her efforts to relieve suffering during the violence that followed Partition.
She died in Borneo while on an inspection tour for the St. John's Ambulance Brigade.
