Football Coach

The Resume

    (December 5, 1962- )
    Born in Mentor, Ohio
Head football coach at Youngstown State (1986-2000) and Ohio State (2001-10)
    Division I-AA record: 135 wins, 27 losses, 2 ties
    Division I record: 106 wins, 22 losses

Why he might be annoying:

At least three of his players (Ray Isaac at Youngstown and Maurice Clarett and Troy Smith at OSU) took money and other benefits from boosters.
He resigned during an NCAA investigation into Ohio State players trading memorabilia for cash and tattoos (May 30, 2011).
He learned about the rules violations in April, 2010, and failed to report them as required to either the NCAA or the school's athletic director and compliance department.
He signed an NCAA statement that he knew of no violations (September, 2010).
According to Sports Illustrated, at the end of the annual OSU summer camp, he would rig a raffle for prizes, such as cleats and jerseys, so the elite prospects would win.
A colleague said, 'In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns too buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel.'
    He wore sweater vests.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won four national championships in Division 1-AA (1991,1993-94,1997) and one in Division I (2002).
He had a knack for pulling out close games.
He was known for his composure on the sidelines during games.
He donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to cancer research and to refurbishing the Ohio State campus library.
OSU went from obsequiously sucking up to him (President Gordon Gee on firing Tressel: 'Are you kidding? I'm just hoping the coach doesn't fire me.') to throwing him under the bus in hopes of minimizing NCAA sanctions.
