Why he might be annoying:

He was nicknamed 'the Merry Mortician' for his two off-season activities: working as a funeral director in the day and performing in vaudeville at night.
He advertised for Lucky Strike cigarettes.
He said he probably could have won 300 games if he had not been a heavy drinker during his playing days.
He encouraged Cincy fans to stuff the ballot box for the 1957 All Star Game, resulting in eight Reds being elected as starters -- and in the Commissioner's office stripping fans of voting rights for the next 13 years.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to his first wife, Ellen, for 50 years until her death.
He popularized the phrase, 'It's great to be young and a Yankee.'
He was the winningest pitcher for the Yankees in the 1920s.
