The Resume

    (November 25, 1638-December 31, 1705)
    Born in Alentejo, Portugal
Daughter of King Juan IV of Portugal
Queen Consort of King Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland (1662-85)
Served as regent for her brother, King Peter II of Portugal (1704-05)

Why she might be annoying:

She had a sheltered upbringing, with one contemporary claiming she had ‘hardly been ten times out of the palace in her life.’
She secretly married Charles in a Catholic ceremony before marrying him again in a public Anglican ceremony.
Her Roman Catholicism made her unpopular with the British public.
After repeated clashes with William and Mary, she returned to Portugal (1692).

Why she might not be annoying:

She had to put up with Charles’ constant infidelity.
    She suffered three miscarriages.
Charles refused when advisors suggested he divorce Catherine and find a new wife who would be Protestant and more likely to provide an heir.
Charles said, ‘She could never do anything wicked and it would be a horrible thing to abandon her.’
She was credited with popularizing tea drinking in England.
