    Appeared on Broadway in ‘Bells Are Ringing’ (1956-59), ‘The Ritz’ (1975-76), ‘California Suite’ (1976-77), ‘The Floating Lightbulb’ (1981), and ‘The Tenth Man’ (1989-90)

    Before his acting career took off, he worked as an elevator operator – a job he got because he was the only interviewee who fit the uniform.
    He starred in a short-lived sitcom, ‘The Hathaways,’ as adoptive father of a trio of performing chimpanzees.
    He described himself as a ‘hypochondriac, paranoid, nervous wreck.’
    He said about Los Angeles, ‘If you're an actor and not working and you don't play tennis or golf, you can go stark, raving mad. I know. I lived here for 18 years.’
