Why he might be annoying:

He yodeled on a lot of his songs.
Even after appearing on the influential 'Louisiana Hayride' radio program (1948), he could not earn a living from music and had to work as a mailman part time.
Commercials for his greatest hits compilations were a staple of local late-night TV.
The albums themselves became staples of the bargain bin at used record stores.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served with the US Navy in World War II.
He taught himself guitar despite having lost two fingers on his left hand while working as a meat packer.
His song 'Rose Marie' topped the British charts for 11 weeks, a record that lasted three and a half decades.
His recording of 'Indian Love Call' saved the world in Tim Burton's 'Mars Attacks!' by making the Martians' heads explode.
