Why he might be annoying:

He said, 'I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault.'
He hit Darryl Stingley during a pre-season game (August 12, 1978) and left him paralyzed.
Commenting on his refusal to apologize to Stingley, he said, 'I don't think I did anything wrong that I need to apologize for. It was a clean hit.'
In his autobiography, he said the NFL should ban quick short patterns like the one on which Stingley was injured, prompting a New York Times reviewer to observe that it was like John Wilkes Booth 'suggesting that hereafter a president be prohibited from attending the theater.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Although he did not feel guilty about the hit on Stingley, he said, 'I feel sorry for what happened to him.'
No penalty was called on the play.
When Stingley died, he said, 'Daryl will be forever remembered for his strength and courage.'
After he lost a leg to diabetes, he founded a charity to fund diabetes research.
