Why he might be annoying:

He twice divorced.
Some have said that by being as secretive and shy as he was, he let his amazing talent go to waste.
A few hand written letters were found from him to a former lover of his who turned out to be underage.
He went by his initials because he was ashamed of his Jewish heritage.
It's rumored that he had a tunnel built from his house to the city so he could avoid the paparazzi and media.

Why he might not be annoying:

He said: 'What I like best is a book that's at least funny once in a while... What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.'
He was so bothered by Hollywood's interpretation of his story, 'Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut,' that he refuses to sell them the rights to any more stories of his.
His son, Matt Salinger, is an actor.
The character Terence Mann in 'Field of Dreams' is based on him.
The character William Forrester in 'Finding Forrester' is based on him.
