The Resume
(September 22, 1983- )
Born in Charlottesville, Virginia
White nationalist and alt-right activist
Founder and President of Unity and Security for America
Principal organizer of the ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville, Virginia (August 11-12, 2017)
Rally resulted in over 40 injuries and the death of Heather Heyer, a counter-protester who was run over by a white supremacist
Why he might be annoying
He was arrested for shoplifting (2005).
He was sentenced to 50 hours of community service after pleading guilty to assault for punching a man in the face while gathering signatures for a petition (April, 2017).
He did a political 180, going from the liberal Occupy Wall Street movement to the reactionary alt-right.
He also went from voting for Barack Obama for President to claiming the US government is waging genocide against white people.
Right-wing conspiracy theorists have suggested he is an undercover liberal – secretly funded by George Soros, of course -- who intentionally planned for a violent rally to reflect poorly on the alt-right.
Ironically, he accused a KKK leader who held a rally in Charlottesville a month before ‘Unite the Right’ of being paid by ‘left-wing groups to discredit legitimate conservatives.’
While other alt-right leaders had the basic decency (or at least the PR savvy) to denounce the violence, he tweeted, ‘Heather Heyer was a fat, disgusting Communist. Communists have killed 94 million. Looks like it was payback time.’ (August 18, 2017)
He initially claimed his account had been hacked.
He then blamed the tweet on Ambien and Xanax. (Apparently, the drugs need an updated warning label: ‘May cause user to reveal self as an asshole.’)
Why he might not be annoying
Before going alt-right, he twice had roommates from Africa.
He had to be rescued by police after being punched, tackled and spat on at a post-rally press conference (August 13, 2017).
He made Donald Trump’s attempts to equate white supremacists with the people protesting against them look almost diplomatic.
He admitted his comments about Heyer were ‘heinous.’
