Native American Icon
    (circa 1720-April 20, 1769)
    Born in Michigan
    Chief among the Ottawa Indians
    Started war known as Pontiac's Rebellion 1763 - 1766
After the British victory in the French Indian War, the British took over territories belonging to the French
Not needing Native Americans for anything, needing their land and no longer fearing them as foes, they treated them poorly, leading to the rebellion
    Also known as Obwaniyag
He never won a major battle, and his Indian allies only won a couple of small ones.
Although the conflict bears his name, he was more the instigator than leader of it. None of the other Indian tribes recognized him as their leader.
His presumptuousness in negotiating a peace treaty which included the acceptance of British bribes caused much resentment of him, leading to his murder at the hand of other Indians.
His original plan was to attack Fort Detroit under the sign of truce, but the English had been alerted by an Ottawa servant girl and were not fooled.
He then laid siege to Fort Detroit but with neither the know how or equipment to storm the fort had to eventually raise the siege.
After this, he fled to Illinois where the British contacted him and worked out a peace treaty.
A very average and unimpressive car brand was named after him.
He and his followers broke the sign of truce (or tried to) several times.
A very nice city was named after him.
He was murdered by his fellow Native Americans.
He only launched the war after having been assured by French spies that the French army would be coming to his help.
    His personal courage was unquestionable.
His burial site remains a mystery.
