    Also acted in 'Embassy (1972),' 'Earthquake (1974),' 'Man Friday (1976),' 'Escape to Athena (1979),' 'An Eye for an Eye (1981),' 'Q (1982),' 'Killpoint (1984),' 'City Heat (1984),' 'Party Line (1988),' 'The Banker (1989),' 'Crack House (1989),' 'A Time to Die (1991),' 'Se7en (1995),' 'Once Upon a Time... When We Were Colored (1995),' 'Steel (1997),' 'George of the Jungle (1997),' 'Corky Romano (2001)' 'Vegas Vamps (2003),' 'Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon (2004)' and 'Brick (2005)'
    He went to Southern Illinois University on a football scholarship, but dropped out to pursue modeling and acting.
    He is considered to be the first blaxploitation icon and has acted in many '70s blaxploitation films.
    He dipped into the well for the short-lived 'Shaft' TV series (1973-74).
    He's played so many cops in movies he should have his own precinct.
    He was a member of New York's famed Negro Ensemble Company, and portrayed heavyweight boxing champ Jack Johnson in the stage rendition of 'The Great White Hope.'
    He said of his role as John Shaft: 'Number one, it put me on the map. To this day that film still works. I was blessed.'
    Isaac Hayes singing about him as 'the black private dick who's a sex machine with all the chicks' won an Oscar for his composition 'Theme from Shaft' (1972).
    He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993, and talks to men's groups about early detection.
    He has been steadily employed in films, appearing in at least one movie every year since 1979.
    He won an MTV lifetime achievement award for his John Shaft role (1994).
    He and fellow blaxploitation stars Fred Williamson, Jim Brown and Pam Grier all parodied themselves in the 1996 film 'Original Gangstas.'
