    The U.S. took the rest of Alabama from Spain at the Louisiana Purchase (1813).
    It only took two years for settlers to meet the requirements for statehood (1817-1819).
    They are the namesake for the country group Alabama.
    Musicians Lionel Richie, Emmylou Harris, Randy Owen, Eddie Kendricks, Jimmy Buffet, Tammy Wynette and W C Handy were born in Alabama.
    Sportscaster Mel Allen and athletes Hank Aaron, Jesse Owens and Mia Hamm were born in Alabama.
    Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama (December 1955).
    It was the 1st state to license dental surgeons (1841).
    It was the 1st US state to enact an antitrust law (1883).
    Martin Luther King, Jr, marched from Selma to Montgomery (March 1965).
