The Resume

    (May 17, 1985- )
    Born in Medellín, Colombia
Birth name is José Álvaro Osorio Balvín
Colombian reggaeton singer, Latin pop music/hip-hop star
Albums include 'Real' (2009), 'El Negocio' (2011), and 'La Familia' (2013)
Best known singles include 'Yo Te Lo Dije,' 'Tranquila,' 'Ay Vamos,' and '6 AM'
More than 343 million collective views on YouTube and Vevo
'Tranquila,' specifically, became the first Colombian reggaeton video to garner 125 Million hits on YouTube
'La Familia' debuted at No. 14 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart

Why he might be annoying:

His songs have been called bland and unoriginal.
His Spanglish-Colombian remix of Robin Thicke and Pharrell's 'Blurred Lines' was received poorly.
He tried and failed to build a music career for himself in New York City during the early 2000s.
He counts fellow wanksta rapper Drake as his professional inspiration.
He became estranged from his father after he broke off with him as a manager.
He got his first tattoo at the age of 12 (and now has close to thirty tattoos covering his body).
His first hit single, Yo Te Lo Dije (I Told You So), shares a title with a popular Randy Travis breakup song.
He reportedly 'spent his days and nights crying,' as he became more successful, saying 'I didn't want make more music. I basically wanted to quit and be dead.'
He instigated the Donald Trump-NBC feud when he pulled out of his slated Miss USA appearance, in response to Trump's controversial comments about illegal immigrants, calling it 'hateful political rhetoric' and leading other performers involved to follow suit in solidarity with Mexico (Jun. 25, 2015).
His actions were criticized as grand-standing in some quarters, promoting misinformation about Illegal Immigrants as being exclusively Latino, when they aren't (and vice versa).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He worked as a dog-walker.
He started out covering old Nirvana and Metallica songs.
He first got into hip-hop staying with his aunt in Staten Island.
He became the first Colombian artist to collaborate with Prince Royce.
He overcame his stress by learning meditation on a trip to Thailand.
'Tranquila' and '6 AM' both topped Billboard's Latin Rhythm Airplay chart for over 10 weeks.
He was nominated for 3 Latin Grammys for '6 AM' and 'La Familia' (2014).
His 'La Familia' album won the Premios lo Nuestro Urban Album of the Year (2015).
He is the first major Colombian performer to make headway as a reggaeton singer (a field mostly dominated by Puerto Ricans and Dominicans).
The Miss USA gig he backed out of was supposed to be his first performance on national mainstream television.
He said 'in life the only impossible is what you have not tried…I've learned that the biggest mistake is to stop trying.'
He launched a social media campaign called #Latinossomosfamilia (Latinos We Are Family) to address the Colombia-Venezuela border crisis (Aug. 2015).
