Premise: A police captain recruits three young adults to go undercover to infiltrate counter-culture criminals
There were morality concerns over young undercover cops busting adults.
Their hippie look wasn’t just their cover; it was their essence.
The opening credits showed them constantly on the run.
The three members of the Mod Squad had arrest records.
It made no bones about being stereotypical, the blonde, the urban black and the spoiled white boy.
Bud Raskin wrote the pilot in 1960, eight years before the series became a reality.
It featured a battered 1950 station wagon nicknamed ‘Woody’ (which didn’t last long).
A 1999 movie based on the series, proved to be irrelevant and outdated.
That movie lacked the personality of the TV series.
The series is a 60's icon.
It had a successful 123-episode run.
The directing and writing credits appeared at the end of the epilogue instead of the beginning sequences.
Each of its protagonists had a different legal issue. Pete stole a car after being disowned by his parents in Beverly Hills. Julie was born to a prostitute in San Francisco. Linc was charged in the Watts riots.
The stories were loosely based on the experiences of Bud Ruskin. Bud was a young undercover officer who ran a squad of undercover narcs in the late 1950's.
It spawned a 1979 reunion movie with the entire original cast.
It has been hailed as the inspiration for such shows as 'Starsky & Hutch' and '21 Jump Street.'
