Why Eight is Enough might be annoying:

Actress Diane Hyland, who portrayed Joan (the mom), died of cancer after the fourth or fifth episode of the show was filmed. This forced the writers to work around her, They first said Joan was away, and by the second season, they made her dead and the father, Tom, was now a widower.
For a few episodes, Tom was the middle-aged widower learning to date again. He quickly found Abby and married her in a two-hour TV special (November 9, 1977).
The then unknown Mark Hamill gained super stardom as Luke Skywalker in 'Star Wars' and decided to abandon his role as David and was replaced by Grant Goodeve.
    Lani O'Grady
killed herself in a drug overdose (2001).
Siblings Susan and David got married in a double wedding episode. Susan's husband was Merle the Pearl Stockwell, a pitcher for the New York Mets.
In a 1996 hoax, a minor magazine reported that Adam Rich was shot to death.
It has been argued that the series ripped off 'The Brady Bunch.'

Why Eight is Enough might not be annoying:

The series tended to show good family values.
The parents would offer guidance but would allow the children to experience and make their own decisions.
The phrase 'Eight is Enough' became a catch phrase and the punchline to a few off colored jokes.
The series was parodied in Mad Magazine #201 as 'Eight is Too Rough' (September 1978).
After the series went off the air, it spawned two reunion specials.
