He was named after a Confederate general (Robert E. Lee Pettit, Jr.).
For a basketball player, he was thin.
He was cut from his high school basketball team as a freshman and a sophomore.
Late in one season, he was a player-coach for six games. That was the only pro coaching experience he had.

He was a high scorer in a low-scoring era.
He was the first NBA player to score more than 20,000 points.
Only Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell have more rebounds than him.
He led the St. Louis Hawks to the 1958 NBA championship.
He was well-conditioned and consistent, never averaging less than 20 points per game in a season.
He spent his entire career with the Hawks.
He is a member of the NBA's 25th, 35th and 50th Anniversary teams.
