    State Senator in Virginia (1915-1925)
    Governor of Virginia (1926-1930)
    Democratic Senator from Virginia (1933-1965)
    Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules (1941-1947)
    Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance (1955-1965)
    Although Democratic president Franklin D. Roosevelt made it possible for Byrd to become a Senator, he became one of the loudest Democratic critics of the FDR's New Deal.
    He had a record of being disloyal to his party, hesitant to support Harry Truman in 1948 and refusing to endorse Adlai E. Stevenson in the 1952 election.
    He was a big stick-in-the-mud for presidents, believing that federal power should be limited.
    He was one of the loudest advocates for segregation, his advocating of 'Massive Resistance' to integration caused many Virginia public schools to close.
    He ran for president in 1960, harming the Kennedy campaign in the South.
    He voted against all civil rights bills.
    He was a self-educated and self-made man.
    As governor of Virginia, he improved the roads and turned a $1,258,000 debt into a $2,596,000 surplus.
    He was opposed to spending while on debt.
    He criticized government waste.
    He stuck by his conservative Jeffersonian principles no matter how unpopular they were.
    He strongly opposed socialism.
    He was known to be kind in person.
    He spent the last year of his life dying from a brain tumor.
