Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of University of Virginia.
Coach Steve Sampson named him 'Captain For Life' of the American squad, only to strip him of the title shortly thereafter, publicly blaming John's partying, missed plane and bus flights and refusal to play a defensive role (1998).
The upheaval caused the team to finish dead last during the 1998 World Cup.
News came out in 2010 that Sampson actually stripped the midfielder of his captaincy for having an affair with teammate Eric Wynalda's wife, destroying his marriage.

Why he might not be annoying:

In 1994, People Magazine listed him as one of the World's Most Beautiful.
He was the first American to play in the English Premier League.
He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame (2005).
