(January 7, 1910-December 14, 1994)
Born in Huntsville, Arkansas
Governor of Arkansas (1955-1967)
Lifelong member of the Democratic Party
Known for strong segregationist stands during the civil rights movement
Why he might be annoying
He was a politician.
In 1957, he used the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the court-ordered integration of schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Like George Wallace in Alabama, his motivation was more about obtaining white segregationist votes than any conviction.
He inherited strong socialist leanings from his father, a member of the Socialist Party and was accused several times during his career of being a communist.
What kind of name is Orval?
Why he might not be annoying
President Eisenhower nationalized the Arkansas National Guard and ordered it to stand down and replaced them with the 101st Airborne Division, which was ordered to protect the integration of the Little Rock Schools.
He was a teacher before entering politics.
He served under General Patton during WWII rising to the rank of major.
He later (like Wallace) regretted his actions and apologized for them and won more than 80% of the black vote in his campaigns for governor.
After retiring from politics, he managed a Lil Abner theme park.
He was born premature, weighing only four pounds and as a child was known to be well behaved, hard working, and a very bright bookworm.
