He did color commentary for opera broadcasts in the same way people would commentate sporting events.
As a result, listeners would call in to complain about 'some idiot talking' over the music.
He is best known as the condescending narrator of 'Fantasia (1940)' that tries to explain everything for idiots.
For the 2000 re-release, his commentary in 'Fantasia' had to be dubbed by an actor because the soundtrack to his segments were badly damaged.
His compositions were disliked by critics for their populist style.
