First Lady
    (February 28, 1941- )
Born in Al Minya Governorate, Egypt
    Born Suzanne Saleh Thabet
Wife of former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak (‘she wasn’t associated with the regime; she was the regime’)
    First Lady of Egypt (1981–2011)
2008 Goodwill Ambassador nominee for the Food and Agriculture Organization
Early pictures of her suggested she resembled a cross between Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush.
She thought of the title of First Lady (or ‘El Hanem’) as ‘Western.’
Feminists described her foray into humanitarian and non-governmental organizations as self-serving (‘she’s not a human rights defender; she was doing this as part of her personal glory’).
She was more concerned with winning international awards than the welfare of her citizens.
The older her husband got, the more dangerous she herself became.
She was the daughter of an Egyptian doctor and a Welsh nurse.
She hated the idea of forced marriages — especially marrying at 17.
She supported her sons’ ventures, one in business and the other as a successor to Hosni.
To most Egyptians, she remained a large mystery (though one man expressed a desire to slug her in the chops if she ever showed her face on the streets).
She definitely helped keep the regime in the family, especially with regards to her two sons.
