Why he might be annoying:

At 5'11, NFL scouts said he was too small to play.
His brother, Kevin, who also joined the U.S. Army, gave up a minor league career with the Cleveland Indians.
His death got plenty more attention than the average soldier because of his former career in the NFL.
He died too young.

Why he might not be annoying:

He gave up his NFL career and a $3 million per year offer to follow his dream to enlist as an Army Ranger.
His brother is also an Army Ranger.
He graduated in 3.5 years from Arizona State with a 3.84 grade point average.
He turned down offers from other teams out of loyalty to the Cardinals, who are perennial cellar-dwellers.
He and his brother, Kevin, received the Espy's 2003 Ashe Award.
He died while serving in action in Afghanistan.
He was awarded the Silver Star less than a week after his death.
