Why she might be annoying
At 18, she dropped out of college to live with 53-year-old J. D. Salinger.
She is better known for her affair with Salinger than her writing.
She said 'Salinger was the closest thing I had to religion.'
She upset many Salinger fans by discussing their relationship in 'At Home in the World' and by auctioning his letters to her (1999).
Maureen Dowd compared her to Monica Lewinskly, calling them both 'leech women.'
She posed for a 'Vanity Fair' story holding her removed breast implants.
Why she might not be annoying
Although she was accused of using Salinger, he was the one who initiated the relationship.
She said she would have preferred donating Salinger's letters to a library, but she had to sell them for financial reasons.
Software developer Peter Norton bought the letters and returned them to Salinger.
She was one of the first authors to use the internet to regularly communicate with her readers.
Asked how she would feel if Salinger wrote about their affair, she said 'I'd really be fascinated by such a book. I'd be the first one to buy it.'
