Monarch
The Resume
(January 5, 1592-January 22, 1666)
Born in Lahore, India
Birth name was Shihab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram
Fifth Mughal Emperor of India (1627-58)
Shah Jahan translates as 'King of the World'
Descendant of both Genghis Khan and Charlemagne
Why he might be annoying
He led an unsuccessful rebellion against his father.
One of his first acts after becoming emperor was to have his stepmother imprisoned. (To be fair, she probably was plotting to put one of her kids on the throne in his place.)
One European observer wrote, 'It would seem as if the only thing Shah Jahan cared for was the search for women to serve his pleasure.'
He was rumored to have had an incestuous affair with his oldest daughter, Jahanara Begum.
Why he might not be annoying
His reign was considered the golden age of the Mughal Empire.
He had the Taj Mahal built as a memorial for his favorite wife, Mamtaz Mahal.
After he fell ill, he was overthrown by three of his sons and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.
The incest rumors may have been spread by one of his sons to help justify their rebellion.
