Biblical Characters
    ( -circa 33)
    Crucified alongside Jesus Christ
Dismas is known as 'The Good Thief'
Dismas is patron saint of condemned prisoners, repentant thieves and (for some reason) Guam
They are unnamed in the Bible, and the names Dismas and Gestas were first applied to the pair in the 12th century.
Dismas' name is also spelled 'Dysmas,' 'Dimas' and 'Dumas,' while Gestas' name is also spelled 'Gesmas.'
Gestas mocked Jesus, saying, 'If you are Christ, save yourself and us.'
Gestas was crucified on Jesus' left, providing another illustration of the Bible's anti-southpaw bias.
According to legend, Dismas prevented a gang of thieves from robbing Mary and Joseph during the flight into Egypt.
At the crucifixion, Dismas rebuked Gestas, saying 'We are justly condemned, but this man has done nothing amiss.'
Jesus told Dismas, 'Today, you shall be with me in paradise.'
The singing of the hymn 'The Good Thief' is a highlight of Eastern Orthodox services on Good Friday.
Dismas is the namesake of San Dimas, California, the setting for 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.'
