His story continued the trend of Jamie Foxx portraying troubled real life musicians.
He refused to take any medication for his mental illness.

In a series of articles, Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez chronicled Ayers' life as a homeless violin virtuoso (2005).
He also played cello and double bass.
His mother forced him to receive electroshock therapy, which proved unsuccessful.
