Why he might be annoying
He grew up rich.
Many of his plays are bitter and surreal.
His career dried up in the 1980's.
He became a terrible alcoholic.
He can be acerbic and bitchy in interviews.
He said: 'I have never met a creative artist in my life that I've respected that was not a Democrat.'
He wrote a play about a man who has sex with a goat.
At age 64, he was arrested for indecent exposure on a public beach.
Why he might not be annoying
He hated his wealthy parents' lifestyle, choosing to hang out with poor artists and actors instead.
He won two Tony awards and two Pulitzer prizes.
His plays are angry, sad, and hilarious.
Although he is gay, he hates being pigeonholed (so to speak) as a 'gay writer.'
His work came back into fashion right around the time he quit drinking.
When arrested, he explained that he merely wanted to shake the sand out of his swim trunks, and the charges were dropped.
He has a sense of humor about himself and his work.
He said: 'The only time I'll get good reviews is if I kill myself.'
