First Lady

The Resume

    (August 11, 1975- )
    Born in London, United Kingdom
    First Lady of Syria (2000 - )
Wife of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad (m. 2000)

Why she might be annoying:

Her first name sounds like 'Asthma.'
She has been called Syria's Marie Antoinette.
International public outcry ensued when leaked emails detailed her extravagant shopping sprees during the Syrian Civil War (Jan. 2012).
While Syrian protesters were being gunned down in the streets, she was allegedly concerned about obtaining a copy of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II' and a new chocolate fondue set.
Those same leaked emails revealed her bragging 'I am the REAL dictator,' asserting that her husband 'has no choice,' but to listen to her.
She was caught cracking jokes at the expense of the Homsi Syrians (just days before the regime massacred hundreds of them).
She tried her hand at damage control by releasing Instagram photos of her feeding hungry Syrian families, but most critics didn't buy it and it failed to silence them.
A fawning 2011 Vogue article praising her as 'a rose in the desert' was removed from the magazine's website as the outrage over the Syrian massacres grew.
The Vogue editor who published the article (who was subsequently released) described her as the 'First Lady of Hell.'
She rarely makes public appearances (which is probably a smart move on her part).

Why she might not be annoying:

She graduated from King's College London with a Bachelor's in computer science and French literature (1996).
She made history as the first Sunni Syrian to marry an Alawite national figure.
When she first emerged on the national scene, she was praised as a transformational figure in Middle Eastern politics (her primary issue was women's rights and education).
She is arguably more pragmatic than her husband.
She was probably joking about being 'the real dictator' (likely in reference to her family).
She speaks English, Arabic, French, and Spanish.
She ranked #1 in Elle's Most Stylish International First Ladies (2008)
She ranked #3 in Women Magazine's Top 10 Most Beautiful First Ladies (2014).
She ranked #2 in The Richest's Top 7 Most Beautiful First Ladies (2011).
