Songwriter

The Resume

    (December 24, 1918-June 23, 2019)
    Born in Edgard, Louisiana
Songwriter, music producer, talent scout, bandleader, and trumpet player
Frequently collaborated with Fats Domino, producing and co-writing his songs ‘The Fat Man,’ ‘Ain’t That a Shame,’ ‘Blue Monday,’ ‘I’m in Love Again,’ ‘I’m Walkin’,’ ‘I’m Gonna Be a Wheel Someday,’ and ‘Walking to New Orleans’
Also wrote and/or produced songs for Smiley Lewis (‘I Hear You Knockin’,’ ‘One Night’), Lloyd Price (‘Lawdy, Miss Clawdy’) and Shirley & Lee (‘Let the Good Times Roll’)

Why he might be annoying:

As a performer, he had only one hit on the R&B chart, ‘Country Boy.’ (1950)
He wrote and recorded the original version of the puerile novelty song ‘My Ding-a-Ling.’
He founded his own record label, Broadmoor, but it went defunct after only a year.
His relationship with Fats Domino was often contentious, with one critic noting, ‘Bartholomew always felt superior to Domino as far as musical ability was concerned, but Fats had the hits.’
Plans for a concert celebrating his 100th birthday had to be suspended when he was hospitalized.

Why he might not be annoying:

He learned to play the trumpet from Peter Davis, who had earlier mentored Louis Armstrong.
He learned to write and arrange music while serving in an Army band during World War II.
He was a key architect of the distinctive New Orleans sound in 50s R&B and rock.
When Chuck Berry scored a #1 hit with ‘My Ding-a-Ling’ (1972), he tired to steal the writing credit from Bartholomew.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1988) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1991).
