    Born in Nadiad, India
    Advocate for Indian independence
    Elected president of the Indian National Congress (1931)
    Served as India's first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister (1947-50)
    Known as Sardar (Chief), the Iron Man of India and the Bismarck of India
    His name contains a double ‘bh.’
    He had hemorrhoids.
    He was a leader of the ‘Quit India’ campaign to refuse to support Britain during WWII.
    Although representatives from 13 of India’s 16 states wanted him to become the country’s first prime minister, he stepped aside in favor of Nehru at Gandhi’s request.
    He was unprepared for the violence that broke out during the partition of India and Pakistan.
    He was an excellent bridge player.
    He learned Sanskrit from Gandhi while they were imprisoned together.
    During civil disobedience campaigns in India, he played a key role in getting different castes to work together.
    After learning of plans for an attack on Muslim refugees in Amritsar, he met with Sikh and Hindu leaders, argued that attacks on defenseless people were cowardly and dishonorable and prevented the threatened violence.
    He survived an emergency plane landing in the desert (1949).
