    (March 16, 1822-May 25, 1899)
    Born in Bordeaux, France
    Birth name was Marie-Rosalie Bonheur

Chief works were 'Plowing in the Nivernais' (1848) and 'The Horse Fair' (1855)
She was expelled from several schools for disruptive behavior.
She scandalized society by wearing men's clothing and smoking cigarettes.
While uncharacteristically wearing a dress, she was arrested by a gendarme who thought she was a man masquerading as a woman.
She kept a menagerie of animals at her home, including a lion and lioness, a stag, a gazelle, wild sheep and horses.
She was known for the accuracy of her images of animals.
She was the first woman named an officer of the Legion of Honor (1893).
She said of critics of her attire, 'The epithets of imbeciles have never bothered me.'
